Deltawelle – Schatten (2026)

Balancing poetic but poignant and down-to-earth lyricism with energetic, brash and evocative melodies, Deltawelle have established their name as a driving force in Germany’s indie-wave scene. Formed in Berlin by Barney Riley and Franz Schneeweiß, while they were performing in separate music projects, Deltawelle expanded through various collaborations; now, they are a mature testament to musical evolution, inspiration and honest directness in 21st-century existence. Already a regular name on The Other Side Reviews, the lads have directed our readers and us to their signature sonic obscurity. Today, we’re taking a look and listen to their most recent release, ‘Schatten’.

The English translation of the German word “schatten” is “shadow” – rather apt considering the spirit of Deltawelle’s new single. The band explain: “’Schatten’ isn’t an escape into the dark – it’s the moment of reflection between stillness and motion. The song merges driving energy with honest directness, resonating with listeners who feel outpaced by modern life yet keep moving forward. Lyrically, it captures the quiet tension between social pressure and self-awareness – a subtle act of defiance against conformity… It is a late-night anthem for those caught between exhaustion and renewal.”

Thematically, the message of ‘Schatten’ is profound, and its straightforwardness merely adds to the weightiness; however, it is far more than a significant bunch of words strung together in an interesting tune. Melodically, the pulsating rush of synths crashes along in a bold, almost head-whipping beat. While the electronic element prompts the power of motion, the flick of drums and guitars adds rock and funk vibes to the song – the vintage tone cloaking the sense of defiance and disregard for a single route, while retaining some reflection in its retro element.

So, what is my overall opinion of Deltawelle and ‘Schatten’? A fan of Deltawelle, I find this track another powerful proclamation of the lads’ notable presence in the music scene. It’s dark and obscure, but simultaneously a refreshing breath of melodic grit and glitter that we so sorely need nowadays. I’ve recommended Deltawelle before, and I do so again.
