Track of the Day: Christof Jennings – Taking Over (2026)

Beginning his journey in music as a vocalist, singer-songwriter Christof Jennings toured the UK with bands like The Young Drifters and The Benidorm Stylistics; then he stepped aside and leaned toward music production with zeal. Following a couple of degrees in music production, the Canadian native, but now living in the UK, secured a place on the Sony Writing Camp in 2021. Brimming with a newfound confidence from the time at the writing camp, he took a deep breath and put himself out there, releasing his collaborative debut project, The Damian Mixtape, the following year. Skip ahead a little bit, and Jennings is remerging with his latest single, ‘Taking Over’.

Alright, brief background over, let’s get down to business and take a look (and listen) to ‘Taking Over’. Co-produced with Cornel Sorian, ‘Taking Over’ is, ultimately, a love song brimming with declarations of love, compliments of beauty, yearning, desire, and all that stuff you say when you’re utterly besotted. Lyrics like “You wake the butterflies in my belly” and “I’m a better man with you in my company” are sure winners for the sunshine and happiness haze of being in love. Even more exciting is that these words are laid alongside a suave Motown-esque soul style, upping the ante and allure of romantic affairs.

Upon first listen, I was immediately transported back to the soulful tones of the 60s and 70s; however, as the track continues, lilts of 90s R&B sweep across the tune. Drippings of Marvin Gaye and Boyz II Men glisten atop ‘Taking Over’ as the bold beats entwine with shimmering synths. Yet, while the melody is an intriguing one, it is Jennings’ rich vocals that make the song sultry, sensual, and damned sexy.

Filled with sex appeal and raw emotion, ‘Taking Over’ is that smooth song perfect for a heartfelt serenade. This is my introduction to Christof Jennings, and I am eager to hear more from him. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended.

In addition to the single, a lyric video has been released for ‘Taking Over’. You can view the video below and/or on Durham Records YouTube channel.
