Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard – A New Moon (2026)
Described as “sometimes soft, sometimes loud, but always direct”, Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard offer a sense of solace, understanding, and raw emotional connection with their songs. Built on songwriting, although the melody is as significant, Turner draws on the artistry of vintage rock bands, yet infuses the tunes with hints of pop, country, and, well, anything that feels right at that moment. Joined by a rotating group of collaborators – the Dudes – Netherlands-based Turner is taking on the indie music scene with a song in his heart and a guitar in his hand. Join us as we delve into the debut track, ‘A New Moon’.
Self-produced, with mastering by Sam Moses and mixing by Yannick Bovens, ‘A New Moon’ brims with honesty and raw emotion, set to a vintage rock meets indie-folk tone. While the single has a strong old-school leaning, dragging you back to the 1960s and 1970s, there is a contemporary edginess that transcends time and generations.
Guitar-driven, Turner’s acoustic guitar walks along with the bass, keeping a steady pace. His tambourine chimes along, while keyboards twinkle, and a piano and Luke Bohnyard’s ukulele keep an organic flair throughout the arrangement. For me, it is the electric guitar that adds a punch to the arrangement, slicing in with classic rock riffs. Of course, we can’t forget Nicky-Boy Brown’s anchoring drum and Turner’s soothing vocals. Harmonic and united in its rhythmic pulse, ‘A New Moon’ showcases how a great mixture of instruments need not clash, but rather join in smile-inducing camaraderie and cohesion.
Songwriting is at the core of Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard’s music, and ‘A New Moon’ adds weightiness with its powerful message. Turner explains:
“This song came from a moment of not having answers yet, and the message is to get through the rough patch to find something different, but beautiful on the other side. Sometimes you just gotta shift your perspective and let the change come from within.”
The first song from their upcoming album, ‘A New Moon’ makes me eager to hear more from the band and see (or rather hear) what else they have in store.
