Track of the Day: Victoria Perry – Howling At The Moon (2026)

Willing to delve into the grittier areas of life, singer-songwriter Victoria Perry takes us into the themes of familial loss, yet she continues to “search for ways to connect to those who have moved beyond the veil…” instead of mulling over and falling into darkness. This is my introduction to Perry and her emotional music, but she has already established a strong following in and beyond her New Zealand borders. From streaming to performances, Perry’s confidence shines through each second of each single. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Howling At The Moon’.

Following her acclaimed debut track ‘Every Wish’, released in 2025, ‘Howling At The Moon’ is Perry’s first step into 2026. Produced by Victoria Hollings, with mixing by Ben Malone and mastering by Josh Llewellyn, the sophomore single retains the haunting soulfulness of ‘Every Wish’, yet brings a hint of indie-pop to the mix. Reminiscent of artists like Florence + The Machine and Paloma Faith, Perry adds an uncertain obscurity to the melody; then again, a sophisticated clarity and maturity bind the highly vulnerable, fragile flush of rich vocals and skin-tingling instrumentation.

Listening to ‘Howling At The Moon’ is not merely sitting back in your armchair and hearing the song, but rather sets you adrift on a shimmering sonic river, ready to embark on a musical journey. Opening as an intrepid voyager prepared for anything, the sound drifts across your face as you peer into the distance with a smile; then, things become a little… not uncomfortable, but daunting. While the surface is shining and sublime, the tumultuous waves beneath push ripples of shimmering water across your boat and feet. Crashing drums pulsate, while a piano slips in the background; however, and this is for me, it is not either of these elements that grabs your stomach, making it do flip-flops, it is the violin. Haunting and breathtaking, but simultaneously a charming slick of sincerity, the violin inserts a ghostly ambience while Perry’s vocals intensify the vibrant, almost palpable poignancy.

A fantastic introduction to Victoria Perry, ‘Howling At The Moon’ is a song I’ll not soon forget, and I can imagine her spirit can win any audience. I am eager to hear more from Perry and look forward to future releases.
