A Chat with Centrifuge (09.06.25)

Drawing together the “drama of 70s power-pop, the rawness of 90s alternative, and the playfulness of 00s indie”, foursome Centrifuge immerse you in a beautiful sonic experience with each melody. We speak with Centrifuge about their new EP, Daydreams & Breakdowns, what music means to them, upcoming plans and more.

OSR: How did Centrifuge come about?

Centrifuge: It all started with a bunch of songs MILLER, a singer-songwriter from Stuttgart / Germany, composed and recorded on his old 4-track tape machine. After gaining more and more interest from local clubs, musicians and of course friends, MILLER formed a band with three muso friends. They played a lot of gigs in the local club scene and then decided to record their first EP.

OSR: What does music mean to you?

Centrifuge: Music is a fascinating and complex form of communication. It’s the perfect way to express emotions and thoughts that are hard to explain in standard conversations. Combining lyrics with the emotional strength of melodies and instrumentations offers a much wider universe of opportunities. Composing and texting always is a deep dive into reflecting your own life, while playing live with the band is a miraculous connection between individuals, each one bringing the own emotional interpretation of the song into the performance. And there also is an audience that reflects and reacts, too, which becomes another dimension in this whole universe.

OSR: You recently released your EP, Daydreams & Breakdowns. What can you tell us about it? Is there a theme or backstory?

Centrifuge: The EP is kind of collection of songs, that represent the different aspects of the Centrifuge live sound. The real thread can be found in the lyrics. Like most of our songs, they deal with mental or emotional problems or unpleasant situations in life.

OSR: What do you hope people take from your EP, Daydreams & Breakdowns?

Centrifuge: All the songs on the EP deal with emotional difficulties, but the songs aren’t meant to bring the listener down. It’s more about the healing experience of realising that you are not alone with your bullshit problems in life. Your problems are always unique, but they are universal at the same time. Even this small band from southern Germany sings about the same problems, and they do it with a positive energy. So can people.

OSR: What does Daydreams & Breakdowns mean to you, and what do you take from it?

Centrifuge: We had incredible fun, recording this piece of music. Being together in the studio for hours and hours and days and days meld us together. We also learned a lot about recording technology. It was an intense and formative experience.

OSR: If you had to recommend a new listener to your sound, which song would you recommend and why?

Centrifuge: The songs are all very different. I don’t know. Normally I’d say, listen to the whole thing. It’s just about 20 minutes of pleasing music and lyrics for your ears and your mind. And after that, please tell me, which song fits you most.

OSR: What advice do you have for emerging artists?

Centrifuge: Be brave, be yourself, play life as often as you can! Meet real people in real clubs.

OSR: What can we expect from Centrifuge in the future? Any new releases or tours?

Centrifuge: The next big thing will be the release of our first LP. It’s already recorded and in the mastering process. It will be released in the first half of 2026.

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Centrifuge: Yes, please don’t forget: Everything is better with CENTRIFUGE! 😉
