ABFAB – Wide Open Spaces (2026)
With over 2600 shows beneath their belts, 3 million hours on stage, and a growing international audience, South African duo ABFAB reach far beyond their SA borders, turn people’s heads, and lift everyone’s spirits for a brief moment – or longer if you consider their songs seem to stick in your head. Combining the talent of seasoned musicians Lisa “MYNX” Hugo (vocals) and Sean “STYX” Nunan (drums), ABFAB is an established figure in the South African music scene, setting a “…benchmark for high-energy entertainment.” Join us as we delve into their most recent release, ‘Wide Open Spaces’.
Following their 2025 holiday single, ‘Christmas Nights’, ABFAB walk into 2026 with the carefree Cape Town vibe of “alright, let’s have a good time” and their single, ‘Wide Open Spaces’. Recorded and produced by Brad Grobler, ‘Wide Open Spaces’ retains the pop-rock tinges of previous songs ‘Tequila Nights’ and ‘Wake Up!’; however, a softer, solid indie-pop tone takes the fore. Not as bold or hand-pumping, ‘Wide Open Spaces’ breathes life into a calmer, gentler, mellifluous feeling of soothing tranquillity.
As Nunan’s drums ride along a mellow guitar, and Hugo’s powerhouse vocals both dance across and weave into the melody, ‘Wide Open Spaces’ embodies the theme of freedom, empowerment and a liberating deep breath, removing yourself from all worries and concerns – the perfect song to end a week. ABFAB explains:
“This isn’t just a track; it’s a celebration of the Cape Town spirit. We wanted to capture that specific feeling of good friends, long drives, and the freedom of the open road.”
When I first came across ABFAB and read the band’s name, my mind immediately raced back to Jennifer Saunders’ 90s show, Absolutely Fabulous – shortened to Ab Fab. Hugo and Nunan may not be a pair of tipsy Londoners trying to survive on booze and cigarettes; however, they certainly embody the concept of being absolutely fabulous. Here’s to ABFAB!
