9 o’clock Nasty – Crowland (2024)

Three years ago, The Other Side Reviews discovered a UK-based band that would snap your head to attention demanding recognition. At first, the songs were howling punk with a dash of alt-rock; then they led us to off-kilter, indescribable howling punk, and today 9 o’clock Nasty is the epitome of weird creepiness trapped in sonic wrappers. A memorable take on Justin Timberlake’s ‘Sexy Back’ and the delightful collaboration with i am the unicorn head in ‘Dude, Your Mom’s A Squid’, 9 o’clock Nasty are kings of covers and collaborations alongside their aristocratic punk rock originals.

Ending 2023 with the single ‘Unkle Natur’ and well-received album Culture War 23, the trio from Leicester hit the ground running with 2024’s ‘Crowland’. Living in this uncertain world filled with bouts of scepticism, instability and scary scariness, we need something to cling to for salvation – enter 9 o’clock Nasty with ‘Crowland’. Instead of backing away from the violence and rage of current society, Ted, Pete and Sydd delve into the chaos embracing the “violence of nature and fear of the foreign” with mad sonic skills.

Sauntering along the edge of this world where clocks drift backwards, 9 o’clock Nasty hit you with a barrage of punk rock. Interestingly, while the punk intensity oozes through the melody, a lesser tone of alternative rock soothes any chaotic sentimentality. Have no doubt, the unique brand of 9 o’clock Nasty punk lingers as the bold staccato vocals tap your brain with a repetitive rod and the distorted discomfort screeches beneath with drums, guitar and flits of electronic beats; however, it is a soothing anthem for the lads’ new realm.

“This is Crowland where we embrace the violence of nature and fear of the foreign… Flooded playgrounds are relics of a time when well-being was a thing. We cast aside such feeble thoughts as we remember that what is up is down and we music stay down… If you single loud enough you won’t hear the sad voices. Music from the underbelly of a broken society.” – 9 o’clock Nasty on ‘Crowland’

In addition to the single, 9 o’clock Nasty released an official music video for ‘Crowland’. The video can be viewed below or on their YouTube channel.
