Ainsley Costello – Someone’s Someone (2022)

Evolving a sound that is becoming known as “pretty punk”, Ainsley Costello is a revolutionary among her contemporaries. Hailing from the country music capital Nashville, this singer-songwriter shows that more than folk can come from Tennessee. Slathering her sound with a strong pop-punk aesthetic, Costello brings empowerment, passion and strength to her listeners. The latest addition to her well-received repertoire is ‘Someone’s Someone’.

Whenever I listen to Costello’s music, I am dumbfounded by the sophistication in someone so young. Her melodies can effortlessly send listeners soaring to another dimension; however, her maturity is not only heard in the harmonic arrangements. In ‘Someone’s Someone’ Costello takes on self-worth, distinction and self-discovery in her empowering lyrics. She explains that “…for women, putting ourselves first has been a generations-long problem. Sure, it’s improved, but I still think society has a strong tendency of shaming young girls into thinking that the best thing they can be is someone’s significant other…Now that I’ve gotten older, I wish I would’ve heard more songs that affirmed me and my dreams.” – this is what ‘Someone’s Someone’ is all about.

Instead of being a teenage girl who follows the stereotypical “chasing boys” cliché, Ainsley Costello chases dreams, not boys. Unlike her more subdued ‘Two Ships’, Costello takes a stand with a rock-inspired sound. Upbeat, high-paced and “pretty punk”, ‘Someone’s Someone’ has a strong reminiscence to Paramore with Costello’s vocals lying between Avril Lavigne and Hayley Williams.

Jovial, bright and bouncy, it is impossible to listen to ‘Someone’s Someone’ and not feel inspired. Her heartfelt vocals ooze passion and tenderness, but also seem to be boldly making you stand up and say, “I am someone!” Costello herself is anthemic, and this track is just another song proving her awesomeness.
