ANI D – Color Of Your Soul (2025)
The brainchild of US-based Ani Djirdjirian, ANI D is a solo project brimming with originality, authenticity, innovation, and, mostly, a message of hope, empowerment and honesty. Beginning her musical career at a young age, ANI D was classically trained, which led to original songwriting, which then led to earning degrees in Vocal Performance and Social Work; however, it is the musical aspect that draws our attention today. Already prominent as a composer for films and various artists, ANDI D is a self-expression of “love, liberation, and self-expression”, where she finds solace and offers solace to others.
Produced with Krista Marian and Arman Aloyan, ‘Color Of Your Soul’ retains a thread in the pop genre; however, its alternative, almost avant-garde sentimentality offers an eclecticism and obscurity breaking beyond any pop tone. Shifting between soul, jazz and traditional Armenian tones, it is the perfect expression of ANI D’s Armenian roots and the song’s overall reflection of the “ethnic cleansing of Armenians indigenous to Artsakh in 2020 and 2021”.
One of the more intriguing aspects of ‘Color Of Your Soul’ is the interplay of stark clarity and tragic despair. It’s like someone placing every element of a tale in front of you, but you aren’t allowed to merely skim over the story – you need to explore it. The percussion and ANI D’s rich vocals tug at your heartstrings and leave you speechless from raw emotion. Is it fear? Is it shame? Is it the skin-tingling sense of “how did that happen”? Only you can answer that.
While ‘Color Of Your Soul’ reflects on the ethnic cleansing a few years ago, the timelessness of its message is undeniable, be it a genocide or social prejudice. ANI D explains:
“I created this piece as a response to the growing apathy in our political climate and a lifetime of being silenced as a queer SWANA artist and woman. I’ve been told over and over that business and politics don’t mix, that taking a stand would alienate my audience… but business is inherently political, and art is meant to stir. To confront.”
In addition to the single, ANI D released an official music video for ‘Color Of Your Soul’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
