Ari Joshua – Reversible Submersible (2025)

With roots running deep in soul, jazz and avant-garde stylings, musician Ari Joshua can only be described as the guy who gets you chilling with a vibing groove, then throws in some oddness to the mix but retains the soulful sentiments of the rhythmic soundscape. From ‘Soul Mine’ in 2023 to his 2024 single ‘Elephant Walk’, and the re-imagined cover of ‘Voodoo Chile’, Ari Joshua celebrates the human essence at its core with moving melodies. Join us as we delve into his most recent release, ‘Reversible Submersible’.

Following the critically acclaimed ‘Blurry Face’, Joshua is joined once more by the talented John Medeski (keyboard) and Billy Martin (drums), as well as adding Jason Fraticelli’s bass, merging “live chemistry with lush post-production to create a true original…” in ‘Reversible Submersible’. So, while these musicians caught the heart of vintage jazz-rock with psychedelic slices of sound in ‘Blurry Face’, the new track takes a turn from stamped out live style to heady, weighty, bold rushes of music seeping into your skin and sending tingles down your back.

Recorded at Applehead Studios, ‘Reversible Submersible’ delicately blends the freedom of improvisation with the sophistication of intricate production. Engineered and mixed by Chris Bittner with additional mixing by Jonathan Plum and mastering by Joe Lambert, the new single is a mish-mash of yesteryear’s funk and jazz-rock grooves; however, contemporary vibes emerge with a slip of modern-day surf-rock lingering in the old-school rhythms. Ari Joshua explains:

“This one was about going deeper. Where ‘Blurry Face’ was a lightning strike – a live take frozen in time – ‘Reversible Submersible’ is like navigating the ocean floor with a headlamp and a dream. We shaped it, sculpted it, layered it. There’s intention behind every sound.”

As an instrumental single, I can’t make any comment about Joshua’s lyrical skills, but it’s hardly necessary. In the concoction of soaring guitars, a bold bass, psychedelic shimmering keys, and pulsating drums, you feel as though you are there in the studio enjoying the fervour of raw music. Moreover, when the five-minute song comes to an end, it’s like you’ve had the best chat with old friends and can go home with a satisfied smirk on your face.
