Ari Joshua – Soul Mine (2023)

From JazzWeekly to Rhythm Passport, Chunedesk, The Urban Music Scene, Music For Al, Roadie Music, and various other publications, Ari Joshua is building a reputation as contagious, lively and enchanting. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, but raised in the USA, Joshua has a diverse background and experiences which are elegantly expressed in his eclectic music. Willing to experiment with genres, this notable composer and guitarist has a strong funk meets jazz sound but with soul and slightly rock-tinged arrangements. Having collaborated with iconic artists like Michel Shreive (Santana), Barrett Martin (Mad Season and Screaming Trees), Peter Buck (REM), KJ Sawka (Pendulum), Robert Glasper, and many more, Ari Joshua is considered one of the music scene’s most beloved performers. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Soul Mine’.

On the heels of his singles ‘Fresh’ and ‘The $1000 Question’, Ari Joshua once again collaborates with acclaimed musicians on the new single ‘Soul Mine’. Along with his dynamic guitar, Joshua is joined by Delvon Lamarr (keyboard), Grant Schroff (drums), Tor Dietrichson (percussion) and Skerik (saxophone). Previously collaborating with Lamarr, Skerik and Schroff on the well-received track ‘Fresh’, ‘Soul Mine’ is another funky, groovy and fun-filled single from these talented musicians.

Recorded with music engineers and producers Mell Dettmer, Jason Gray and Doug Krebs, ‘Soul Mine’ takes us back to the heyday of funk with the beautifully arranged instrumental song. While the instrumentation is harmonic in its funky melodic combination, it is interesting to hear each element receiving prominence before coming together in a wonderfully united whole. The keyboards and drums lay a firm foundation for the saxophone and guitar, although there is an enchanting keyboard solo making you tap your toe in time to the tune. Yet, for me, it is the saxophone that brings a true edge to ‘Soul Mine’. Standing out above the others, the sax brings a sensuality and fun to the already vivid melody – or perhaps it’s the fact that I grew up listening to Chicago and love that funk-rock style.

It is often the case that I find meaning in the lyrics of a single with the emotive quality of the voice bringing everything home. Yet, ‘Soul Mine’ proves that you can connect with audiences on an even deeper level with pure instruments. Meaning is found in this intimate connection sending my soul soaring through the vibrant musical bubble – all while dancing to the funky melody.
