Artio – Split Soul (2025)

If Paramore were to have a child with Skrillex and it were raised by Seether and Slipknot, the chances are the kid would be Artio. In their unique brand of alternative rock, the UK-based Gen-Z foursome have been tossing listeners from pillar to post in a ferocious whirlwind of kaleidoscopic sound. Formed in 2018, Rae Brazill (vocals), Rob Arkle (lead guitar), Jai Akhurst (rhythm guitar), and Ieuan Jones (drums) have earned international critical acclaim with their trailblazing music.

Showcasing their versatility in the 2024 album Babyface, Artio demonstrate shifts from furious hard rock to softer, soothing alternative rock ballads. Today, we take a gander at ‘Split Soul’- a three-and-a-half-minute drag back to the early 2000s realms of rock. For some reason, while Artio is far harder than Paramore, my mind constantly reverts to the rushed urgency of earlier Paramore. Perhaps it is the similarity of Brazill’s vocals to Hayley Williams wrapped in a high-speed crush of knee-scraping rock?

Powerful and bold, the vocals shine with furious silvery brightness weaving through the track. Yet, as much as Brazill grabs my attention, the lads make a smashing impression with scorching guitars and pounding drums. Produced by drummer Ieuen Jones, listening to ‘Split Soul’ is a constant wash of head-whipping, breathtaking sonic waves. Interestingly, while the track oozes with raw grit, a gleam of sophistication and elegance clings to the overall arrangement. So, in other words, it’s a bit crazy but oddly controlled.

‘Split Soul’ is a knock between the eyes, but it also brims with weighty depth to have you thinking long after the song ends. The band explain:

“’Split Soul’ explores the ideas of bodily autonomy, purpose and navigating your destiny. Toying with the ideas of divine intervention or forging your own path, the fear of the unknown and the pressure to show up regardless of the horrors in your head. In a society where you’re told anything is possible if you just believe, whilst constantly being put into boxes and behind barriers…”
