BE|AH – Would You? (2025)
Building songs like the way he built his first skateboard ramps in the early 1990s – “a few odd pieces of wood from the parents’ garage, an old sign, a handful of nails, and a simple understanding of the state of things…” – BE|AH brings a personal tinge to eclectic music leaving you sauntering across a blur of weird and off-kilter, but comfortable and charming. The latest addition to his discography is the single, ‘Would You?’
Following the 2024 single, ‘Do As I Say, Not As I Do’, ‘Would You?’ is the Germany-based BE|AH’s first step into 2025. Adopting an entirely independent, DIY approach to music, the track is self-recorded, composed and produced in the singer-songwriter’s home (specifically his bedroom). Unlike the previous track, ‘Would You?’ shifts from an indie-rock melody with hard-hitting guitars and drums to a simplistic thread of vintage country. Basic, barebones, and stark, ‘Would You?’ is as heartfelt and poignant with its minimalist combination of drums, acoustic guitar, and interspersed piano.
One aspect I find intriguing in ‘Would You?’ is how so little can translate to so much. It’s, in a word, basic, but within its basic-ness, there is a kaleidoscopic tenderness and weighty poignancy offering profound intimacy and intensity. Similar to old-school artists like James Taylor and Johnny Cash, BE|AH lets you enjoy the easy, laid-back music, but simultaneously gets you thinking about the deeper, underlying message.
Celebrating the art of songwriting, ‘Would You?’ was composed to catch raw vulnerability and inner enlightenment. BE|AH recorded wrote the lyrics of ‘Would You?’ during the first few minutes after waking up. He explains, “…I gave myself a five-minute window from when I opened my eyes to when I stopped recording…” In this brief period, where you linger in the world of dreams and the brush of reality, a person could catch the most intimate side of yourself in meaningful words and ways.
Both melodically and lyrically, ‘Would You?’ uses minimalism and simplicity in a way that fills your heart and leaves you smiling. This is my introduction to BE|AH, and I cannot wait for more from him. Until then, I’ll enjoy the rest of his discography as he is not one to be ignored.
