Bog Witch – Dream Birds (2025)
With a natural talent for evocative storytelling, singer-songwriter Wendy DuMond enchants you from the first word like Scheherazade keeping the Sultan intrigued in Arabian Nights. Now, we’re no Sultan who would behead the storyteller on the morrow, but we are as intrigued and transfixed. Performing as a member of Americana group Blackfoot Daisy and solo artist Bog Witch, DuMond weaves her compelling narratives into moving genre-diverse music. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Dream Birds’.
Following her well-received singles, ‘Mr. Fly’ and ‘Hatter’s Mad Emporium’, the US-based Bog Witch wrapped up 2025 with ‘Dream Birds’. Rooted in the “freak folk” genre, ‘Dream Birds’ combines a bold ukulele and warm synth-pad, touched by the imperfections of “…room noise”, for a “gentle yet ominous” sound. As with acts like Joanna Newsom and Animal Collective, there is an avant-garde obscurity to ‘Dream Birds’ – an off-kilter lilt evident across Bog Witch’s discography. Yet, the new single appears more vintage folk-inclined than songs like ‘Hatter’s Mad Emporium’.
Melodically, the tune offers the roughness of raw, real, unfiltered emotion; however, in some way, there is a sophisticated elegance and languid flow in the uncertainty of the production. Moreover, Bog Witch’s barebones vocals offer a tender humanity with the warmth and comfort of an old friend’s big embrace with an almost palpable sincerity. Bog Witch explains:
“The song drifts through a surreal nighttime vision – lying on a railroad track as birds, locusts, and mysterious spiritual echoes move through the scene. It explores the space between fear and comfort, omen and blessing, with imagery that feels both folkloric and sacred… a quiet, atmospheric folk piece that feels like a visit from something otherworldly – a song carried on wings, lingering long after waking.”
In addition to the single, Bog Witch released an official music video for ‘Dream Birds’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
