Bold Boy – More Than Friends (2026)

Bold Boy – what an apt name for a band. Joining the talents of seasoned musicians Mike Paterson and Nathan Merrimen, Bold Boy is a couple of bold boys making a bold statement and a bold stamp on the music scene. From alternative rock to post-punk, indie rock, and vintage punk, the UK-based pair are experimenting and innovating, honing and polishing their Bold Boy sound. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘More Than Friends’.

A slap of vintage punk from the outset, this just over two-minute tune doesn’t let up for a single second. Merrimen’s drums crash and pound while Paterson’s bass treads across with urgent ferocity. While this is a song made for the mosh pit, there is an odd sincerity laced within the smash of sound as the vocals caress you in the tempestuous musical mire.

Following the well-received single ‘Reactions’, bassist Paterson steps into production mode for ‘More Than Friends’ to ask that simple question: do you want to be more than friends?  Oddly enough, ‘More Than Friends’ arrives midway through the tumultuous Australian reality show, Married At First Sight. Now, at a glance and even when staring at it, Bold Boy’s punk anthem has nothing to do with MAFS. Yet, to me, it is amusing in its quandary of whether the person feels the same, where do we go from here, and is it even worth the time when we could be wasting our lives?

“‘More Than Friends’ is about as straightforward as themes go for a song. Most of us have been in this kind of situation at least once… Maybe there’s someone you’ve just met, or someone you might have known a long time. It’s obvious there’s some kind of connection there… You’d like something more, but you haven’t “taken the plunge” yet to investigate if they feel the same, or even if they do feel the same, would it even work? What if you wait too long? Is there ever a right time?” – Bold Boy on ‘More Than Friends’

Crass, brash, abrasive and rough, but with the sentimentality, sincerity and tenderness of a lost heart, Bold Boy make a stamp with ‘More Than Friends’.
