Cay Dioses – Gone (2022)

Inspired by the likes of Tame Impala, Glass Animals and Foals, singer-songwriter Cay Dioses easily falls into the indie-pop genre. Yet, while a strong commercial pop sound exists in her music, a unique lilt makes Dioses stand out in the crowd. With only one release on her Spotify, Dioses might be considered a newbie in the music scene, but this doesn’t mean she isn’t garnering a following. In fact, coverage from various playlists and radio stations has the pair reaching international audiences. Come with us as we delve into their debut single ‘Gone’.

Two years in the making, ‘Gone’ is a heartfelt song about the disintegration of relationships. Casey Wells explains that it explores “…the struggle between the comforting yet ultimately disconnected feelings of a declining long-distance relationship” – a theme that is elegantly captured in ‘Gone’. Despite there being a warmth in Dioses’ dulcet vocals, a simultaneous haunting flitters through the angelic tone. It is spine-chilling and makes you smile to have someone understand your pain but also cry when realising how vulnerable people are.

Just as the theme and vocals bring a soul-soaring quality to ‘Gone’, multi-instrumentalist and producer Casey Wells enhances the delicacy of the track in its arrangement. Soft, soothing and gentle, a harmonic balance is heard in the eclectic single. Pounding drums belie a bold piano with Dioses’ violin adding a sprinkling of melancholy to the mix. I could compare it to Florence and the Machine, but there is an innocence and wistful naivety to ‘Gone’. Interestingly enough, while a naivety is heard in ‘Gone’, the song has all the sophistication of any chart-topping ballad.
