Chris Erasmus – We Had It Made (2025)
Every now and then, you hear a song that gives you all the feels, and Chris Erasmus’ ‘We Had It Made’ is one of those. It is a track that oozes heartache and regret, emotions that we all experience at some point in our lives. He lays himself bare with his lyrics.
Erasmus grew up in Zimbabwe before moving to South Africa, leaving at 18 to chase his creative dreams. You will now find him residing in London, though he is a self-confessed ‘country boy’ at heart. He possesses a baritone voice similar to Michael Buble, Chris Isaac and if you want to go even further back, Scott Walker. His vocal delivery is so pure and connects with the listener.
The track has a moving and very sombre piano backed with gentle bass, acoustic guitar and drums. It is simple, yet effective in its structure. Its lyrics are about reflecting on a relationship which, despite you both having good intentions, wasn’t meant to be. Erasmus adds, “This song is about memories and happy days, lonely nights and reflection. I love the idea of finding the perfect moment and saying, right there, dang, we had it made. And that was how the song was made”.
The words he uses here are heartbreaking and honest. “You don’t want the truth, and I don’t wanna lie” speaks about the struggles we face when encountering love. There’s something to be said for seeing the beauty in a relationship gone wrong. “All those crazy nights, young and reckless fights. All the bad memories are still worthwhile” – these are lyrics that are sincere and relatable. Erasmus writes genuine, authentic music with a focus on storytelling.
‘We Had It Made’ is steeped in Americana and country, though Erasmus is really a jack of all trades. He has released a handful of singles prior to this one, all of them showcasing his impressive vocal range. His style is so evidently country but there’s no issue for him to deliver straight up pop as well. He also has voice which could reach the back of an arena in its power.
‘We Had It Made’ is a heartfelt and warm ballad which has the ability to really connect. Its simplicity, coupled with Erasmus’ rich vocals, makes it a beautiful listen.
