Circus Mind – Waste of Time (2025)
If you fancy a dab of old-school rock with funky tones, an alternative vibe, and the contemporary kick of power-pop, the chances are you’ll love Circus Mind. Hailing from the US, New York to be precise, the eclectic collective brings together the talent of Mark Rechler (vocals and keys), Brian Duggan (guitar), Dylan Niederauer (bass), Dan Roth (drums)m Steve Finklestein (percussion), and Michael Amendola (sax). From their 2002 album Circus Mind, to 2006’s Silver Flower, and 2021’s Joy Machine – insert 15 or so years between releases – Circus Mind brings another beat to their streaming world with ‘Waste of Time’.
Following the well-received singles ‘NOLA Song’ and ‘The Battle of Brooklyn’, Rechler and his crew bring the funk with ‘Waste of Time’. Produced by Mark Rechler and Chris Fasulo, with mastering by Dave Roman, ‘Waste of Time’ drags us back to the 1970s with its vintage flavours of rock. From the poppier vibes of The Beatles to the heavier bite of Traffic, melded with old-school Phish, this song breathes life into yesteryear, while retaining a timeless sense of rhythmic grooves and laidback chill. Interestingly, just as the track is the one you sing-along to while rocking your air guitar with a grin on your face, ‘Waste of Time’ has a sarcastic bite.
Penned as the anthem to that self-doubt question of whether anything is worth it or should you just give up, Rechler explains:
“’Waste of Time’ is perhaps a humorous way to look at the angst and despair that us creative folks and indie artists can feel from all the forces working against us on our journey… The uphill battle of distraction, schedules, finance, promotion, organisation, and social networking can make one question: why do we do this at all? It certainly isn’t for the money!”
In addition to the single, Circus Mind released a lyrics video for ‘Waste of Time’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
