Daddy Drwg – Wise Guys (2025)
No stranger to the music industry, singer-songwriter Richard Proctor has fronted bands like Scream, They Walk Among Us, The MeMeMes, and Quicksand Charlie, performing across the globe, earning recognition for a powerful stage presence, and really establishing himself as an eclectic, evolutionary artist. Yet, as much as he has behind him, he appears as spritely as a young kid who just learned his favourite song on the guitar and is about to play his first gig in his solo project, Daddy Drwg. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Wise Guys’.
Following his well-received 2024 album, A Tree Called Happy, Daddy Drwg stomps into the new year with ‘Wise Guys’. Unafraid to get to the mucky core of reality, ‘Wise Guys’ is a satirical social narrative of toxic masculinity aiming at “…the bravado, entitlement, and emotional illiteracy that often pass for masculinity in the modern world.” With infectious swagger, bold hooks and sharp lyricism, this is a song that “…grins while it bites…”
Self-recorded and produced, Daddy Drwg’s ‘Wise Guys’ waivers between a sincere piano ballad and powerful riffs of hard-hitting guitar. Interestingly, while each instrument, from the punchy guitars to the serene piano, comes together in a harmonic whole, the different tempos and tones are like listening to two separate songs stitched together with anchoring drums and held by Daddy Drwg’s rich vocals. It’s odd, this wholeness with distinction, but in the end, ‘Wise Guys’ is a melody for the dark, light, and grey areas of life.
Fun and light-hearted, ‘Wise Guys’ has an infectious melody with toe-tapping, sing-along sensibilities; however, even the melody digs deeper as an expression of its theme. ‘Wise Guys’ can carry on with their lofty whistles and arrogance, but the grittier guitar and drums enhance the raw honesty of reality.
In addition to the single, Daddy Drwg released an official music video for ‘Wise Guys’. Melodically and lyrically, ‘Wise Guys’ packs a punch, but the visual element strengthens its profound satire, unsettling truths, and commentary on the male ego.
