David Scott Weaver – Two (2025)
From folk and bluegrass to rock, gospel and Americana, singer-songwriter David Scott Weaver crafts engaging melodies that speak to the heart while tantalising the ears. No newbie to the music industry, Weaver spent a lifetime building a long-standing career of award-winning songs, notable collaborations, and intoxicating performances. Today, we take a gander at Weaver’s single, ‘Two’.
Bringing real-life experiences to audiences through emotional music, Weaver’s ‘Two’ is a tribute to a true love story – the 60-year romance of Jacob and Doris Bender. Co-written with bluegrass songwriter, Louisa Branscomb, the track uses one story to touch on themes of loss, love and resilience, connecting with listeners in a long-lasting, intimate way. Weaver explains:
“When I started writing this song in the fall of 2020, the news was filled with stories about people losing loved ones to Covid. However, this story stood out, and the couple’s grandson summed up his grandparents’ end of life with this quote, “my grandparents died two days, two minutes and two rooms apart”, and that became the hook and inspiration for this song… I’ve had several people who’ve heard this song tell me it spoke to them or left them emotional because it reminded them of the loss of a loved one.”
Recorded and produced at Gizmo Recording Studio by Gantt Kushner (who also plays lead guitar and bass), ‘Two’ melds the talents of Kushner, Chris Curro (drums), Lynn Hollyfield (vocals), and Weaver (guitar and lead vocals) in a few minutes of solid Americana music. In one way, the track is kaleidoscopic, fusing the steady bass, anchoring drums and rhythmic guitar; however, while the melody has a flowing, free-spirited wave of sound, an odd sparseness exists, giving it a conversational vibe – intimate and raw, but still toe-tapping and body-swaying.
For me, one of the most impactful aspects of ‘Two’ is the interplay of Weaver and Hollyfield’s vocals. Not only does it emphasise the story behind ‘Two’, but the rhythmic harmony enhances a feeling of tenderness, love and connection.
