Dee Rae – Purple and Red (2025)

As the lead single from Dee Rae’s highly anticipated debut EP, ‘Purple and Red’ marks a bold and affecting introduction to the Manchester-based artist’s evolving sonic identity. Drawing from a rich palette of indie and folk influences, the track is a cinematic deep-dive into themes of femininity, identity, and artistic self-discovery, anchored by a poetic lyricism that feels both intimate and expansive.

From the opening notes of its solitary electric guitar ‘Purple and Red’ invites listeners into a dreamlike atmosphere that steadily blooms into something much bigger. Produced by Rhys Jjang (MYTBE, Katie Rigby) and mixed by Joel Johnston (Far Caspian, Ellur), the track grows in quiet confidence, layering haunting melodies, string textures, and subtle percussion beneath Dee Rae’s emotionally resonant vocals. There’s a restrained power here – one that builds to a stirring, full-band crescendo without losing its sense of vulnerability.

The single finds Dee grappling with the contradictions of modern music-making, balancing the pull of artistic purity against the commercial realities of the industry. It’s this tension that gives ‘Purple and Red’ its emotional weight, offering a glimpse into the mind of a young artist navigating the blurred lines between passion and profession.

Echoes of Marika Hackman, Big Thief, Elliot Smith, and Laura Marling can be heard in both the song’s storytelling and its textural complexity. But Dee Rae is far from imitative – there’s a distinctive voice here, shaped by personal experience and a clear sense of purpose. Since first emerging with 2022’s ‘Silver Wallet’, Dee has built a reputation for raw, vulnerable songwriting and compelling live performances, earning slots alongside Francis of Delirium, Allegra Krieger, and The Orielles.

With a debut EP set for release later this year – exploring queer identity, trauma, and growth – and a string of live dates including a headline tour and support for Phoebe Green, ‘Purple and Red’ sets the stage for what promises to be a breakthrough year. As part of Come Play With Me Records’ Next Up North initiative, Dee Rae is more than just a promising newcomer; they’re a necessary new voice in indie music’s ever-expanding narrative.
