Deflecting Ghosts – Unknowing (2025)
A couple of months ago, we were introduced to the US-based group Deflecting Ghosts with their single, ‘Broken’. With a deft kick of alternative rock meets melodic metal, Luke Fitzgerald (vocals and guitar), Rhema Fitzgerald (bass), and Austin Gautier (drums) quickly pricked up our ears while hitting us between the eyes with their music. Now, a couple of months later, Deflecting Ghosts returns to our speakers with the new single, ‘Unknowing’.
A labour of love and pet project for frontman Luke Fitzgerald, Deflecting Ghosts is far more than a mere band. Unafraid to dip into the grittier parts of humanity and draw out personal narratives of challenging times, Fitzgerald uses music as solace, a catharsis, and to get all those things off your chest that you want to shout out but find difficult to relay in conversation. Following the well-received ‘Death Is Calling’ and ‘Broken’, ‘Unknowing’ continues to showcase Deflecting Ghosts’ willingness to tap into desperate, intimate and complex themes.
Produced with Adrian Breakspear, ‘Unknowing’ nods its head to the 1990s/2000s alternative rock scene. Its combination of crashing guitars, a bold bass, and soaring guitars breathes life into nostalgic memories of Seether and Breaking Benjamin. As with Seether and Three Days Grace, the track has a weighty punch in its rock-driven melody; however, and this is mostly due to the rich vocals, there is a soothing acceptance and warmth within the pounding melody.
Sophisticated and elegant, ‘Unknowing’ weaves the various instruments together in a rhythmic rock symphony. Yet, while the song is polished and well-delivered, raw vulnerability leaps from the single. In its profound lyricism and, once again, the rich vocals, you experience a sense of fragility. Deflecting Ghosts explain:
“This is music born out of necessity, not polish – a cathartic release that turns grief and anger into something universally relatable. ‘Unknowing’ isn’t just about despair; it’s about reclaiming strength and choosing to walk away from what breaks you…”
Sincere, sentimental, honest and rugged, Deflecting Ghosts once again pull the band-aid off that wound, but tend it with affection as they sing of resilience, empowerment and turning the bad into good.
