DEV!NE – how did i end up like this? (2025)
Self-described as “emo pop”, one might imagine Calum Devine’s music to be terribly sad, rather angsty, and brimming with the self-turmoil expected from the emo subculture; this isn’t exactly the case. Performing as DEV!NE, the UK-based musician saunters across genres, creating a sound that is not necessarily definable melodically, and far more than inner turmoil lyrics. After almost a year of not releasing any music, DEV!NE returns with his new single, ‘how did i end up like this?’
Following the well-received single, ‘The Golden Funeral’, ‘how did i end up like this?’ shifts from an indie-rock-laced tune to a stronger leaning toward a pop-influenced sound. Fluttering between the heavier indie-pop to a smoother dream-pop tone, but with an obscure alt-pop blend binding each note with a golden ribbon. Listening to ‘how did i end up like this?’ is soothing in one way, tipping you into a bubble of kaleidoscopic fogginess with a bit of a smile on your face and a grin in your heart; however, along with the diversity of his sound, there is diversity and duality in the single itself.
Oscillating between light and dark, bold and fragile, confident and vulnerable, brash and mellifluous – ‘how did i end up like this?’ is a twirl of raw emotion and the essence thereof. Silky and honey-drenched, the shimmering synths match DEV!NE’s rich vocals; yet, simultaneously, there is tragedy etched in each word, each hum, and each moment. The timeless theme of reflection, recognition, and questioning how we actually reached this particular point in time – regardless of whatever area of life or situation – is elegantly expressed with hushed veils like your subconscious speaking to you. The thing is, and this is where DEV!NE’s duality continues, the subdued nature screams of catharsis, solace and finding the one place where you aren’t afraid to ask that formidable question.
I was introduced to DEV!NE last year with ‘The Golden Funeral’ and found his music intriguing; ‘how did i end up like this?’ only adds to the intrigue. I really hope we don’t have to wait another year for more from this talented artist.
