Dream Boy – ivory (2025)
Despite releasing their debut single ‘crying wolf’ last year (according to Spotify, so don’t quote me), Dream Boy are turning heads internationally, quickly gaining a global following with their moving music. Blending elements of dream-pop, new wave, post-punk, and slivers of dark-pop hinting at a gothic soundscape, the Irish foursome take listeners on a sombre ride through haunting wafts of sonic creepiness – but in the best way possible. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘ivory’.
Following their well-received 2024 singles ‘bleed’ and ‘take whatever’, Dream Boy saunters into 2025 with ‘ivory’. Produced with Daniel De Burca, the track is a drag back to the shoegaze sounds of yesteryear. Instances of Depeche Mode wave across the melody, making it perfect if you take a fancy to the darker side of synth-driven music. Yet, as much as there is a dreamy wave of vintage shoegaze meets post-punk, it is the wrap of eerie darkness that enhances an interplay of unsettling and soothing emotions.
For me, ‘ivory’ is an intricate dip into human fragility and vulnerability – the strings adding a particular sense of tragedy. Interestingly, while the loop of wistful but bold sounds is enchanting (sometimes overwhelmingly so), it perfectly captures the theme of memories, behaviour, and being present while stepping back. Dream Boy explain:
“’ivory’ is about letting go. It’s about hearing the same things and seeing the same behaviour, but for the first time, instead of going back, walking away… An exploration into boundaries and finally standing up for yourself.”
Taken from their upcoming EP Drowning In Blue, ‘ivory’ is an exciting leap into the unknown without any parachute. This is my introduction to Dream Boy, and I eagerly await the new EP.
