Echomatica – Technicolour Dreams (2025)

Should you take a fancy to the likes of The Cure, Slowdive and Cigarettes After Sex, the chances are you’ll find yourself hitting the repeat button for Echomatica. Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, the foursome blends atmospheric elements of alternative pop, dream-pop, trip-hop and shoegaze to earn themselves the reputation as “one of New Zealand’s most promising indie acts…” With each track since their 2025 debut single, ‘Love Isn’t Always’, Charlotte Maclean (vocals), Alan Jackson (guitar and programming), Matthew Chong (guitar), and Scott Samson (bass) continue to turn heads globally with a growing fanbase and critical acclaim. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Technicolour Dreams’.

Following the well-received single ‘Month of Sundays’, ‘Technicolour Dreams’ shifts from a grittier but still ambient sound to something with twinkling mystique locked in a sonic wave of dream-pop meets shoegaze and indie-pop. Engineered and produced at Earwig Studios by Darren McShane, ‘Technicolour Dreams’ lives up to its title with dynamic drums meeting a bold bass, soaring guitars, and shimmering synths. Yet, as much as it brims with lush grandness, the expanse is not a place to lose yourself – it is a place where silky sentimentality is simultaneously found in sweeping hills and an anchoring base.

For me, the rush of music seeps into my skin and my head swims with the sleekness of it all; however, Maclean’s fairy-like vocals sparkle as she holds your hand and navigates the velvety ‘Technicolour Dreams’. Given this enchanting tune and the other tracks from Echomatica’s self-titled album, it’s easy to see (or rather hear) why that repeat button will soon become worn. This is my introduction to Echomatica, and I am keen to hear more from them in the new year.
