Ethan Stauffer – Goodnight, Take Care (2023)

Embracing music at a young age, singer-songwriter Ethan Stauffer has, in his words, “been singing ever since I learned to talk and found a love for it in the elementary school choir”. Since then, Stauffer discovered the guitar when he was 12 years old and continued improving his musical knowledge with keyboards throughout high school and college. No stranger to music creation and performance, Stauffer has experience playing with various bands such as Cocktail Party Phenomenon, Bits of Alan, Audacity, The Tisburys and many more. Previous experience may have formed his musicality, but today we’re taking a look at his solo project.

Influenced by various artists such as John Mayer, The Beatles, Phish, Genesis, The Roots, Erykah Badu and Pink Floyd, it is no surprise that Stauffer’s music has a genre-bending quality about it. The first release since his album in 2020, The Ones Worth Hearing, ‘Goodnight, Take Care’ melds an old-school indie-rock style with tinges of classic rock in the melody. Interestingly enough, while there is a strong vintage feel and vibe to ‘Goodnight, Take Care’, a charming modern-day alternative rock feel slithers through in the overall sound.

“Like most artists during the pandemic, I felt creatively stifled with nothing in person going on. Even after things started to open back up, I had a lot of trouble getting back to raw songwriting and playing without self-judgement. ‘Goodnight, Take Care’ was the first glimpse of my pen hitting paper and words flowing free of criticism…this release for me is a pendulum swing away from catchiness and trendiness toward inward reflection and finding self-love in places I forgot were even there.” – Ethan Stauffer on ‘Goodnight, Take Care’

Recorded with engineers Joe Venango and Fred Keller at Everloft Studios in Schwenksville, Philadelphia, ‘Goodnight, Take Care’ is a rich, warm and tender song expressed through a powerful guitar-driven arrangement. What I find intriguing about the song is its kaleidoscopic nature and multi-faceted quality, but still retaining a sense of simplicity with the bold guitars leading the way.
