Foutloos – Leevendig (2025)
Fusing elements of jazz, soul, funk and blues in a tinge of hip-hop grooves, the Belgian trio take you on a kaleidoscopic journey through a flowing stream of sonic goodness. For me, lyricism plays a strong role in capturing the theme and concept of the songs; however, Foutloos proves no words are needed for musical conversations with harmonic melodies. Drawing together the talents of Esther Coorevits (viola), Renaud Debruyne (drums), and Jonas Bruyneel (bass), ‘Leevendig’ is our introduction to the genre-diverse rush of music Foutloos so effortlessly presents. Join us as we delve into this exciting new world.
The debut single from Foutloos, ‘Leevendig’ brims with duality at every turn. Recorded and produced by Jonas Bruyneel, Mirek Coutigny (mixing) and Laurens Grossen (mastering), ‘Leevendig’ has a classical structure, but remains loose with the jazz-filled jam session improvisation. Confident and bold, the drums pulsate beneath with a bass slithering along; however, there is also a sense of vulnerability cutting through with haunting strings taking you on a soul-stirring journey.
Like taking two roads – one of structure and one of a swaying fluidity – ‘Leevendig’ is an intricate web of separate worlds coming together as one in a jazzy, soulful, funky melody. An immersive single, the trio drag you into a wistful haze of sound that keeps your toe-tapping as the drum and bass lay a path ahead; then again, the obscurity of the viola veils the path, steering you off like a siren in the night.
Translated to “lively”, ‘Leevendig’ is exuberant and free-spirited with a vivid appeal in its soothing nature. The band explain:
“’Leevendig’ came about from improvisation sessions hidden in the dunes of Ostend. In the music, too, the sea is not far away: the viola swirls and tumbles like the waves over the groove. Cutting, melancholic and at the same time frivolous, ‘Leevendig’ is a trip on a bed of nostalgic neo-soul.
