Hazlett – last night you said you missed me (2025)
With my first ever review for The Other Side Reviews being Hazlett’s 2023 single ‘Slow Running’, I could not pass up the opportunity to check out their latest record, last night you said you missed me. It’s no secret I’m a huge fan of Hazlett, so news of new records was music to my ears, literally.
Opening with ‘doing my best’, with all the warmth I’ve come to expect, coupled with raw exploration of personal musings. As always, the Hazlett vocals take centre stage as some mesmerising music flows in the background. ‘doing my best’ sets the tone for the entire record, and from then on it goes from strength to strength. Next comes ‘blue jeans’, which injects an energy that jolts the record into life; musically, it captured my attention and had me tapping along instantly. Without missing a beat, the next two tracks, ‘mountain of a memory’ and ‘queen of seasons’, offer much of the same beautiful music.
From the first two tracks, it is evident that Hazlett has found his sound, something he has himself expressed recently, “This one’s a little different, which I know is cliché to say, but it’s true. I think it would be easier to say after all these years that I’ve found my sound and that’s where I’ll stay. But I think there’s a lack of authenticity in staying the same. When I started this whole thing, I wanted anyone who starts to listen to feel like they’re part of this whole thing with me. Growing, trying, and finding pieces of ourselves along the way.”
Next comes one of my favourite tracks of the record, ‘fast like you’. I think it was the bridge that really captured my attention, just some wonderful guitar playing and a great exploration of self-improvement with the line, “I’m learning something, hunny, I’ve got some work to do”. The entire record is fantastic, and I’ll let you discover the rest for yourself, but I do need to mention the track of the album and possibly my favourite song he’s released, the title track ‘last night you said you missed me’. A cosy, beautiful exploration of love with a chorus that will have you singing along almost straight away.
I feel that Hazlett’s charm comes from his way to tap into his own emotions and display them for all to hear, whilst lyrically telling stories the audience can empathise with. This is what sets him apart from his contemporaries. last night you said you missed me illustrates this perfectly and will be an album getting a lot of play from me over the coming months.
