HitherFurther – Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky) (2025)
Staring listeners in the face with a delicate, intricate and eager eye, musician and filmmaker HitherFurther describes himself as “involution, working with the finer fibres”. Hailing from Ireland, Dublin to be specific, the singer-songwriter is a newbie in the music world – or at least according to Spotify – and we really don’t have much information on him. Then again, do you need a lot of research to step into the artist’s sound? Join us as we tiptoe into HitherFurther’s debut single, ‘Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky)’.
Hither means here, and further means over there or moving to a farther point, so how do they come together? With an innovative, creative style, HitherFurther (also known as Marcus McMahon) explores the present but opens a possible world of evolution in a single melody. In the debut single, ‘Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky)’, the Irish artist captures the heart of indie-rock with a soothing acoustic sound. Steady drums beat in the background, while an acoustic guitar rides across the arrangement. Adding a weightier feel to the melody, HitherFurther entwines soft keys with a soaring lead guitar hidden by what, and this is purely my ear, so don’t quote me, a hint of strings.
Recorded at Black Bay Studios on the Isle of Lewis with Pete Fletcher, ‘Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky)’ shows maturity in its production; however, it is also cinematic with an odd sense of underlying… not chaos, but something in the vein thereof. Soothing and bold, but vulnerable and intricate, HitherFurther showcases a means of holding your hand in mellifluous flow while simultaneously caressing your face, saying that things are going to be alright.
One concern I always have when coming across new artists and their debut releases is whether they have peaked. HitherFurther has made an impact with his flowing single, but I’m not so sure. Inspired by the likes of Noel Gallagher, I can hear an Oasis vibe wistfully washing the melody, and I think HitherFurther will lean along the indie-rock lines. Am I correct? Do I believe he’s hit his high with ‘Seagulls (Overwhelm The Sky)’? Only time will tell.
