Jerry Jean – A Home Here
Jerry Jean is bursting with tenderness on his new single, ‘A Home Here’. Following soulful notes from trumpeter Sofie Manoloff on flugelhorn, Jean meets her with enchanting piano keys, and together they create a restful atmosphere as he goes into his testimony. Jean sings openheartedly with an undertone of desperation in his muscular vocal passages. He soon confesses to a lover, “There’s a stirring inside/ That drives me closer to you/ I want to build a home/here”.
The NYC-based singer-songwriter has been performing and winning awards for his classical pop for some time, while garnering 10 million views and plays across digital platforms. With a long artist life, ‘A Home Here’ is Jean’s realization for his need to develop and prioritise inner peace. On the hook, Jean’s vocals glide gracefully over a short incorporation of gospel in the chords. The sound emphasises his commitment, as he sings, “Here/ Where we see the rising sun/ Lay down when the day is done/Don’t need the applause or the lights/I’m keeping my head clear”. The track is written around Jerry Jean’s adventurous piano playing and his brand of classical pop that incorporates warm blues-y undertones.
The song’s structure is loose and feels open. The spaciousness allows Manoloff to enter smoothly throughout the song with arresting playing, ushering in a wholesome spirit using jazz notes. Together, they sonically visualise the space Jean wishes to cultivate – one of warmth and unconditional love where he can nourish his inner world.
The structure is perfect for including the listener. When Jean sings, “There are paths we take in life, where ambitions bring us strife”, his words aren’t interrupted and feel relatable. On the breakdown, his passion helps him make a line of airy spiritual speech: “…Lay down roots and simplify…” digestible. Throughout, the arrangements appear, then move on quickly, making it a bit challenging to fully absorb the song’s energy. Further on the breakdown, Jean’s swirling vocals and twinkling keys trail out, and lassoes Manoloff’s horn back in for an all too short, endearing solo. On ‘A Home Here’, Jerry Jean makes a listenable, heart-warming personal statement.
