Linnéa – Lonely (2023)

The lovechild of No Doubt and Evanescence, singer-songwriter Linnéa wraps a dark obscurity in a pounding garage rock package. Tipping her head at the sound of the 90s, the UK-based musician brings a vintage grittiness to modern-day audiences. While this is my introduction to Linnéa, she has been turning heads across the globe with features from Clout, Edgar Allan Poets, Rock Charts, Plastic Magazine, and We Write About Music among others. With only two singles beneath her belt, Linnéa can be considered a newbie on the music scene but her acclaim as “…enigmatic” (Edgar Allan Poets) and “the princess of rebel rock…” (EDM Rekords) places her as a fierce addition to the rock music scene.

Following her debut track ‘Blue Crystal’, ‘Lonely’ is the sophomore single from Linnéa. Taken from her upcoming EP Fixation, ‘Lonely’ is an intimate track exposing Linnéa at her most vulnerable. In an interview with Illustrate Magazine, Linnéa explained how Fixation is “…based on experiences from around five years ago…a lot of loss, grief, anxiety and heartache all at once and I don’t think I really tried to or even choose to cope well with it…” When we look at ‘Lonely’, Linnéa is touching on those feelings of anxiety, frustration, vulnerability and a cycle of negativity.

“This song is about being your own worst enemy and constantly having to contend with the negative voice inside your head. It’s about wanting to break away from that endless negative cycle that drags you down and just yearning for that inner peace.” Linnéa on ‘Lonely’

Inserting sounds of No Doubt into a bold wrapper of old-school Avril Lavigne, ‘Lonely’ is a pop-rock sonic rebellion. Using the pounding drums and dynamic guitars swirling in a dark, heavy Avril Lavigne meets Evanescence melody, there is a hard-hitting depth to the arrangement. Yet, despite the darkness of this swirling pool of music, an uplifting pop sentimentality lurks within the vocal execution. Linnéa’s obscure voice is reminiscent of Gwen Stefani but has a far more rugged, gritty and raw innocence to it. It is the sophistication of the arrangement with a slash of naivety that makes ‘Lonely’ exquisite.
