Jess Young – Nobody’s Love (2025)

A few months ago, we were introduced to the Irish pop sensation Jess Young. Transcending her Irish borders, her music had already started turning international heads, and we were thrilled to be part of the journey. I mentioned, when reviewing ‘Heartbreak Vacation’, that I was eager to hear more from this talented singer-songwriter – enter the single, ‘Nobody’s Love’. Let’s delve into this new track and see if it stands up to its predecessor.

Following the remix of ‘Nobody’s Love’ – a track that garnered critical acclaim and support from South America to Africa and Europe – Young chooses to release the original version of ‘Nobody’s Love’. Produced by Mezz, the new single retains the pop sound of previous material, but ups the tempo and heightens the beat in a confident rush of music. Interestingly, as much as the melody brings a bolder bounciness with its shimmering synths and dynamic drum beats, Young inserts a flutter of soul and blues into the single. An interspersed guitar subdues the heavier bounce, as Young’s vocals ooze with soul-driven attitude.

Melodically, ‘Nobody’s Love’ is perfect for the dance floor or as a song to shout along to when hanging out with friends. It’s chilled-out but vibrant, soothing and bold, but with a hint of vulnerability and inner reflection lingering throughout. Light and dark, shining and veiled, ‘Nobody’s Love’ intricately unpicks human emotion from all angles. The thing is, inasmuch as the song can pass as a fun, infectious pop song, Jess Young adds greater depth with the theme and lyricism. She explains:

“I wanted to explore my issues around how I fall in love, or how I avoid falling in love. ‘Nobody’s Love’ draws inspiration from a summer romance that was fleeting, but deeply meaningful, when I battled with my own avoidant attachment style and the irresistible pull of the person in question… it’s a summer I’ll never forget.”

Given my enjoyment of her single, ‘Heartbreak Vacation’, does ‘Nobody’s Love’ meet standards and expectations? Edging with a bombastic kick, the new single stands above ‘Heartbreak Vacation’. Is it better or is it less than appealing? Each brings its own charm, so it’s impossible to compare. I must admit, I do prefer the heaviness of ‘Nobody’s Love’ – I suggest you listen to each and decide for yourself.
