Jonny Swift – I’m Losing Track Of My Friends (2025)

From Madonna to Kraftwerk, The Fall to The Doors, saying Jonny Swift’s influences are diverse is an understatement. Hailing from the UK – South Cumbria to be exact – the singer-songwriter brings an innovative originality and eclectic individuality to the indie music scene. The critically acclaimed reviews, radio play, and confident performances make him something to pay attention to; today, we take a gander at his most recent release, ‘I’m Losing Track Of My Friends’.

As this is our introduction to Jonny Swift, I was unsure what to expect and, for some strange reason, it wasn’t quite what blasted from my speakers. Recorded and produced at Cumbria’s Digital Man Recording Studio with Matt Kassell, ‘I’m Losing Track Of My Friends’ is a shiny concoction of indie-pop, indie-rock and some light folk intonations contributing to the obscure vocals. It’s like you stepped into a field of hazy fairy lights with Swift clutching your hand to guide you through the landscape and keep you smiling at all times.

A nostalgic song, ‘I’m Losing Track Of My Friends’ taps its hat to the indie-rock and indie-pop sound of the 90s. A whiff of Fool’s Garden runs in the track, but there is a strong presence of R.E.M. alongside the upbeat lightness of The Byrds; however, as much as there is a reminiscence of these iconic bands, a folk-rock flavour and flair exude from Jonny Swift, giving us something retro but contemporary.

Melodically, the combination of guitars, drums and tambourines is harmonically tempting a toe-tapping, head-nodding attitude. Swift’s rich voice dances across with tender sincerity and languid charm. The thing is, while ‘I’m Losing Track Of My Friends’ is an optimistic tune, the lyricism hits listeners with a deeper, more intense theme. Swift explains:

“The track… is a song about growing up with somebody and then eventually, through the passage of adulthood, losing contact with them… something that we can all sadly relate to.”
