Justpeoplewatching – Superman (2021)

Expectations are something that we all have to deal with to some degree or another. The problem comes when we feel we fail to meet the standards set. Justpeoplewatching are here to let us all know that we are not alone in struggling with this failure through the tones of ‘Superman’. Using the metaphor of being a superhero, the band helps us work through our feelings and gain the understanding that we can’t be everywhere at once and spreading ourselves too thin is never going to help.

The single continues the band’s mission to spread awareness of mental health issues through creative means. While the band started as the solo project of Marc Ferreira (piano, guitar, bass, vocals), Kira Dawson (bass, vocals), Rheo Menard (guitar) and Justin (drums) were soon recruited. Together, they brought the documenting of Ferreira’s journey and struggles with mental health to life in an engaging and open way.

‘Superman’ opens with a delicate piano line that slowly sweeps you into the vocals. While sweeping, the piano line offers a stability that perfectly slides into the drums. As the single approaches the chorus, the melody starts to gain a heavier rock vibe. This bolsters the pained vocals that touch deep in your chest. While relatively minimalistic, the melody has an amazing flying feeling that lifts your spirits while the lyrics fortify your spirit.

Ferreira’s vocals have a sombre feeling as they enter against the piano line. His performance highlights the struggles people face with their mental health. Dawson’s vocals offer a backing harmony that enhances the connection everyone can feel through the single. The lyrics wonderfully meld mental health struggles with the metaphor of being Superman. On the chorus, the vocals soar while filled with a pained expression of emotion. Every word has been steeped in emotion making this song utterly amazing.

Justpeoplewatching use the metaphor of being a superhero to take on struggles with mental health in ‘Superman’. The melody is a steady, gentle and captivating foundation for the emotive lyrics. The vocals bring the pain of people struggling with mental health while the lyrics artfully wrap struggles with the metaphor of the song.
