Kate Prendergast – Ignition (2025)

While Kate Prendergast may not have reached her twenties just yet, the teen singer-songwriter has a wealth of knowledge, emotion, and raw passion brimming in her melodies. Celebrating life in its entirety, she quickly captures your heart and acts as a personal guide to those more profound areas of existence. In ‘Lavender Country’, she dove into a need for peace and “escaping the jail cell they call the worried mind”; and in ‘Undergrowth’, she explored a struggle for balance and a search for hope in new situations. Join us as we jump headfirst into her most recent release, ‘Ignition’.

Following the well-received track ‘Lavender Country’, Ireland’s Kate Prendergast commands attention with ‘Ignition’. Now, I’m not saying she grabs you by the shoulders and brashly shakes you into submission. Instead, Prendergast turns your head with softness, soothing and sincerity intricately executed with rich vocals and hard-hitting instruments.

Produced with Declan Legge, ‘Ignition’ is a blend of folk and country music, tinged with hues of indie-pop and blues. Leaning strongly toward a country-filled effect, Prendergast’s vocals have a nostalgic twang; however, there remains pure clarity in her eloquence, richness and warmth. Prendergast’s vocals always make me feel slightly happier as she brings a comfortable hug, even in the darkest of songs. ‘Ignition’ hints at slight turmoil and frustration, yet the blend of drums, percussion, guitars, and piano keeps a sense of mellifluous calm.

Easy on the ears with toe-tapping infectiousness, ‘Ignition’ might verge on vulnerability; however, there seems to be confidence in the track. Melodically, the track can charm a listener, but it is the lyricism that adds further weightiness. Prendergast explains:

“’Ignition’ explores the uncertainties of starting a new episode in life and the conflicting feelings that often arise for those left behind – between the desire to see loved ones flourish in their new futures and the yearning for them to return home.”
