Kid Lazuras – Masochist Daydream (2023)

In a soothing flow of laidback charm, musician Kid Lazuras explores the darker, deeper crises faced in an uncertain society. Hailing from the UK, the young artist might be in their 20s, but a knowledgeable sage of mature years sits in their breast. We came across Kid Lazuras a few months ago with their single ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’, but they have been turning heads for a couple of years. From the 2021 debut single ‘All Over Again’ to 2022’s full-length album Utopia, Kid Lazuras presents confident, engaging, sophisticated melodies with a tinge of rawness sprinkled in the mix. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Masochist Daydream’.

Following their well-received track ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’, Kid Lazuras adopts a simpler sound in ‘Masochist Daydream’. While a similarity to ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’ can be heard, such as the flutter of blues sliding through the melody; ‘Masochist Daydream’ has a rawer vulnerability echoing in our ears. Finding a balance between organic and synthetic sounds, the acoustic piano rhythmically flows beside tinkles of electronic beats. Perhaps it is the prominence of the piano that offers a stark, acoustic-inspired, barebones edge to ‘Masochist Daydream’. Then again, it might be the stripped-back vocals that bring haunting to the moving melody.

As with ‘Words Are Just Another Way To Hide’, Kid Lazuras uses male and female vocals in ‘Masochist Daydream’. The thing is, while the vocals previously found a harmonic thread to oscillate between high and low registers, this new duet intensifies the intimacy of the track. Light female vocals interpret inner demons while the lower male tones add a heartfelt sense of reflection, submission and denial in response to the trembling turmoil. Oddly enough, the tumultuous tempest in the melody is simultaneously tranquil and devastating. Kid Lazuras explains:

“’Masochist Daydream’…explores the things we tell ourselves to avoid confronting the thought that maybe, deep down, we enjoy inflicting pain upon ourselves. The ethereality of the song emphasises its inward focus, whilst the coupling of the male and female vocalists emphasises the distinction between our inner voices…”

Taken from their upcoming second studio album, ‘Masochist Daydream’ paves the way for more experimental, emotional and obscure sound from Kid Lazuras.
