La Need Machine – Rock And Roll Show (2025)

In their recently released album, Pourquoi? C’est L’Amour!, US-based La Need Machine sauntered through the realms of punk, indie-pop, indie-rock, Americana, and, mostly, rock and roll. With a sound that is hardly definable, yet has a particular distinctiveness, the group brings a new dimension to that “Seattle Sound”. Delving into the complexities of love, loss and relationships, Al Dams (vocals and lead guitar), Brian Hassler (guitar and vocals), and Elise Dahlberg (keyboard and vocals), bring solace and comfort to our ears, eyes and lives. One of the most recent additions to their discography is the single, ‘Rock And Roll Show’.

Following the well-received album, Pourquoi? C’est L’Amour!, and preceding the track, ‘Santa Claus Broke My Baby’s Heart’, ‘Rock And Roll Show’ is a hit between the eyes of pure rock music. Produced by Wes Harris and Bear Davis, the track is a collision of crashing drums, soaring guitars, and a shimmering keyboard peeping from the background. For me, the track oozes vintage rock and roll, dragging listeners back to the 1990s; however, there is a timeless comfort in its retro but modern sound that seems to skip eras with perfect ease.

With sophistication and maturity, the arrangement is harmonious and united, showcasing the skills of the producers, as well as the camaraderie of the musicians. While ideal for the radio, for me, ‘Rock And Roll Show’ is not only listening to a song; it is a trip to the recording studio as La Need Machine brings the rawness of a jam session through the speakers, into your ears and rattling about your brain. Interestingly, as much as the melody is heavy, it is the lyricism that truly enhances the significant theme of love. Guitarist and vocalist Al Dams explains:

“When I get down, of course, I want the love of my life, Marie, there. But she can’t be with me every minute of my life, so I ned rock and roll music to hold my fort down until Marie gets back…”
