Laura Dannan – Lullaby (2025)
One might say that singer-songwriter Laura Dannan’s music journey began with a YouTube series… well, it sort of did. When learning to play the drums, the UK-based musician began the successful YouTube series, Drum Quest, where Dannan interview some of the world’s best drummers. However, it was during the Covid-19 lockdown period that she found her passion for songwriting and began to teach herself the guitar. With a pen in one hand, a guitar in the other, and a bunch of creative, profound, and moving words swirling about her brain, Laura Dannan quickly learned to weave poetic lyricism and emotional melodies into a creative burst of tender music.
This is not our introduction to Laura Dannan, having discovered her folk-inspired music with 2023’s ‘Little Grey’; however, it is our first step into 2025 with her new track, ‘Lullaby’. Following the well-received ‘Sunbeam’, ‘Lullaby’ is another vintage folk tune embracing the simplicity of the folk genre. Yet, as much as the single is a minimalistic meeting of acoustic guitar and Dannan’s vocals, the single offers a delicate sheen of raw vulnerability and tender emotion.
Recorded and produced by Dannan, with mixing by Alex Bush, ‘Lullaby’ is exactly what it says on the tin: it’s a two-and-a-half-minute lullaby. Using intimate narratives and a hushed vocal, the track seems to speak to a person with refreshing whispers. It calms, heals and brushes listeners with a sense of hopefulness, dragging you from dark to light. Laura Dannan explains:
“This is my latest single, a lullaby appropriately named ‘Lullaby’. Whether you think of someone in particular when you hear this song or whether you think of your own self/inner child who also has a need for nurturing and comfort and to be shown love, I really hope this song speaks to you.”
So, what are my thoughts on Laura Dannan and ‘Lullaby’? Honestly, I think I would sleep soundly if tucked up in bed with Dannan singing this song. It’s gentle, soothing, and makes everything seem slightly happier before sending you off to dream beautiful dreams.
