Magdalia – Out of Focus (2025)
With a penchant for emotionally raw melodies, poetic lyrics, and powerful sounds, singer-songwriter Magdalia is establishing herself as a powerhouse in the pop music scene. The Australia-based artist is not only receiving rave reviews and international airplay of her singles, but is enchanting audiences at festival performances, live shows, and has won the title of 2024 ROSM Songwriter of the Year. We were introduced to Magalia back in 2021 with her indie-folk meets pop debut single, ‘Shy To Shine’. Join us as we dive into the most recent addition to her discography – ‘Out of Focus’.
Following her well-received single, ‘housewife’, Magdalia takes a second step into 2025 with ‘Out of Focus’. A lead-up to her forthcoming debut EP, set for release later this year, ‘Out of Focus’ shifts from her indie-infused pop tones to something dreamier, entwining dream-pop and electronic pop into a dance-ready anthem. Penned and produced by Olivia Regueira-Garcia and Liv Volpe (mixing and mastering), ‘Out of Focus’ nods to the likes of Dua Lipa and Ariana Grande; however, Magdalia’s distinctiveness shines through in the rich vocals and intimate storytelling.
Sophisticated and elegant, you can hear the maturity of the arrangement as Regueira-Garcia and Volpe wave their magical production wands across the track. A combination of bold beats and synths twirling about in a haze of electronic pop, audiences might feel a little out of focus with ‘Out of Focus’. Yet, as much as there is a wistful haze of dreamy fogginess brimming with kaleidoscopic fairy-lights, the song is one of resilience, strength and empowerment.
Delving into her experiences as a late-diagnosed neurodivergent woman, and watching her father lose his sight when she was young, ‘Out of Focus’ is an intimate single for Magdalia. She shares: “I wanted to write something that felt good to perform but still told a story that mattered to me. Both experiences were tough and confusing, but they made me who I am. ‘Out of Focus’ is about finding clarity in the middle of all that.”
