Malice In Wonderland – a goth rock band formed in the late 1990s that gained a global following with their blend of hard rock and goth metal. If you happened to have been in the murky depths of the 90s/2000s rock scene, the Norwegian group might have popped up on your radar with their single ‘Lucifer’s Town’ becoming a viral hit online, turning heads on global tours, international features, and even sharing the stage with Def Leppard. Unfortunately, the band dissolved a decade ago, leaving us with the remnants of the past to carry on the cult-like following; however, Malice In Wonderland is back and better than ever!
Drawing together the talents of veteran artists Chris Wicked (lead vocals), Eskil Sæter (guitar, bass, and synths), Marius Mathisen (drums and synths), and Morten Norheim (saxophone), Malice In Wonderland celebrates their 20th anniversary of their debut album with new single, ‘I’ve Chosen Darkness (Over You)’. Wicked explains:
“With the 20th anniversary of our debut album coming up, it felt like the right time to celebrate it. This new single actually began back in 2015, just before we disbanded. We pulled it out of the vault, finished writing it, and hit the studio… it gives a glimpse into the direction we were heading as a band before it all came to an end.”
Pouring themselves into their music, Malice In Wonderland take a part in everything around the new single, from performing and composition to performance, engineering and overall production. Joined by Herbrand Larsen (mixing) and Anders Bjelland (mastering), ‘I’ve Chosen Darkness (Over You)’ is a twirl of classic rock, hard rock, alternative rock, and tints of metal swooping together in hard-hitting music.
No, belay that, ‘I’ve Chosen Darkness (Over You)’ is not a swooping veil of retro goth rock washing over you; it’s a shove into a dark sonic forest with licks of multi-coloured instruments running across your path. It’s a rush of electricity down your spine, a tingling prick on your skin, a foggy flush of musical haze wriggling into your brain. It’s the shot of vodka at the end of a night out – the one that makes everything blurry, but when you wake up the next morning, you know it was worth it.
