Mallory Storm – Miss Apocalyptia (2025)
‘Miss Apocalyptia’ is the impressive debut single from Liverpool-based artist Mallory Storm. She describes it as “the aspiration of becoming the best version of yourself, after going through all the difficult life experiences”. The track is very well produced by Barney Goodall and showcases Mallory’s powerful and commanding voice.
The track has a gorgeous piano intro similar to Queen’s ‘Love Of My Life’. The lyrics tell of a woman who is far from ordinary, but the world just doesn’t seem to see it yet. There is so much more to her, and she is waiting to make a difference. She seems to possess superhero-type powers. Every lyric seems to have been painstakingly chosen by Mallory; “Her world is surreal / the surface conceals most things that she feels” is a fantastic example of the sophisticated use of rhyme on the track.
Mallory has been making her own music for a decade. She gets her love of music from her Dad, who was in a 70s rock group called Gylder that appeared on Top Of The Pops. ‘Miss Apocalyptia’ is influenced by classic acts like Queen, Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush, but you can also hear similarities to contemporary acts like Adele and Lana Del Rey. The track builds upon the first bridge to a more rock sound. There are really lush strings that come in during the second verse. It is backed by solid drums, which complement the track really well.
The term “apocalypse” signifies the end of the world or a complete and utter destruction, often involving a revelation or prophecy of future events. ‘Miss Apocalyptia’ could mean someone wanting to close a past chapter of their life, to be able to rise like a phoenix from the flames. Mallory adds, “I imagined some kind of superhero self, who can rescue you from your difficulties and lift you up. Hopefully, this song can lift other people up too and remind them they can be who they decide to be”.
The track has a big orchestral production but retains a rock element to it. There is something here that would delight listeners of all genres. This is the work of a talented lyricist who is more than ready to carve out a successful career in her own right.
