Mary KilS – Porte Sept (2022)

While this is my introduction to Mary KilS, the France-based singer-songwriter is already establishing herself across the globe. From South Africa to Germany, China to Canada, and the United Arab Emirates to the USA, Mary KilS is receiving airtime on an international scale. I’ll admit, when I first laid eyes on the songstress, I imagined a reminiscence to the legendary Joan Jett; however, there is something more intimate and intoxicating about Mary KilS. One of the latest additions to her discography is the single ‘Porte Sept’.

‘Porte Sept’ (translated to ‘Door Seven’ in English) is the opening single from her well-received EP One. Along with five other tracks, it exudes boldness and truly represents the power of Mary KilS. Interestingly enough, while there is a rock goddess within Mary KilS, each of the tracks has a uniqueness and individuality that transcends genre. Unlike the tender ballad ‘A fleur de peau’ or teetering on melodic metal ‘Long Silence’, ‘Porte Sept’ is a heavier, harder rock alternative. The thing is, while there is a contemporary alt-rock tinge sprinkled atop the arrangement, ‘Porte Sept’ is a nostalgic drag back to the 1980s.

While the track certainly has a harshness to it with a bold rock flavour, a heartfelt sentiment is woven through the melody. Instead of being brash, Mary KilS brings a soft and gentle whimsy to the tune. Touching on the tale of hopeless romance and broken hearts, her feminine vocals bring a heart-wrenching melancholy; however, strength seems to lie beneath this tender voice as the guitars and drums carry her along the sonic river.

As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Mary KilS, but I am certain it will not be the last time I play her music. A sonic gem amidst a sea of pebbles, I recommend this talented artist to anyone.
