Matreya – I Saw The Light (2025)
“There is always darkness before the light” – a proverb that inspires hope, optimism, and the idea that the light at the end of the tunnel is reality, regardless of your mire of despair. Matreya discovered this, and now he wants to share it with the world. His debut single, ‘Eagles’, was a song of transformation; a reflection of what he has experienced, the lessons, and finding inner strength to make the transition from dark to light. In his most recent single, ‘I Saw The Light’ (the one we are about to review), Matreya takes us by the hand through his personal experience with the “pulse of life breaking through the shadows”. Come with us as we dive headfirst into this intimate journey.
Following the well-received single ‘Eagles’, the UK-based singer-songwriter shifts from a strong soulful R&B flavour to something more tribal, pulsating and obscure. Produced by Matreya, Iwan VanHetten, and Reece Hayden, ‘I Saw The Light’ binds the soothing of Matreya’s rich R&B with pulsating hip-hop/Afrobeat rhythms. Leaning strongly toward trip-hop flair, shimmering synths weave with soul-inspired tones; however, it is the strong tribal beat that adds weightiness to the atmospheric soundscape – kind of like a heartbeat pounding within a soul going through the dark to light.
“There have been moments in my life where I’ve felt an overwhelming sadness – where I looked back and could only see the pain, feeling completely trapped by existence. It’s like a cosmic checkmate where you’re faced with a choice: either begin the search for your soul, or fall deeper into the darkness of your own mind. ‘I Saw The Light’ was birthed from that turning point.” – Matreya on ‘I Saw The Light’
In addition to the single, Matreya released a music video for ‘I Saw The Light’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is strongly recommended.
