Mats Dernánd – Waiting For A Train (2025)
When it comes to music, Mats Dernánd is not just a singer-songwriter but has his finger in various forms of creative expression. A pianist, trumpeter, harmonica player, songwriter, composer, singer, and producer, Dernánd eagerly explores different sounds, styles, and saunters through diverse genres. Today, we take an exciting leap into his most recent single, ‘Waiting For A Train’.
Following his well-received 2024 album Lake House, Dernánd steps into 2025 with the song ‘Waiting For A Train’. Self-recorded and produced, the track seems to drag me back to the 90s, drawing together slips of indie-rock, pop-rock, and pop. Pulsating drums beat in the background with soaring guitars holding the tune with vintage pop-rock sentiments. Toe-tapping and infectious as it is, I must note the slice of trumpet and bold harmonica add something special to ‘Waiting For A Train’ – particularly the harmonica. With powerful flair, Dernánd’s harmonica infuses a blues-y sound that is not only breathtaking but soul-stirring.
At some point in our lives – well, at least most of us – we have waited at the train station for a train to take us to something exciting, something scary, something that’s just “meh”. Dernánd penned ‘Waiting For A Train’ while doing just that. He shares:
“Every time I pushed away the thought of recording it. I tried to tell it, “you’re too old”, and kept releasing new music instead, but ‘Waiting For A Train’ simply wouldn’t leave me alone. In the end, I decided to release it just to quiet my mind. I don’t regret it… The title ‘Waiting For A Train’ is actually a pretty worn-out cliché, but that’s okay. I really did write the song while waiting for a train, and now it finally gets to be released. It deserves that, I think.”
For me, ‘Waiting For A Train’ doesn’t have me humming to compose the song like Dernánd. Instead, it’s the infectious song you hum along to because it makes you happy, calm, chilled out, and excited for the upcoming journey.
