Mitchell Broodley – Overtime Again (2026)
South Carolina native, now New England-based, singer-songwriter Mitchell Broodley is offering his own blend of country with a twist in his new single, ‘Overtime Again’. Following his debut single, ‘Except For Christmas Day’, it is clear that this guy is no one-trick pony. Like all great bards, Broodley has let life in and favoured walking his own path rather than taking an early opportunity in Nashville to attend graduate school; this confidence in himself and his decisions can be heard throughout his music.
From the outset, I could tell this wasn’t another run-of-the-mill country track; it had an air of Midwest emo in the opening guitar riff. The technical instrumentation holds the track together and is played with such heart that it leads perfectly into the tale Broodley is ready to tell. Utilising his classic southern drawl to deliver a quintessential country performance, the evocative nature of the vocals just emphasises how personal this track is and only enriches the song further. Lyrically, I really enjoyed the use of sporting symbolism to create a vivid image of Broodley’s world, in which he’s fighting for every second in a long-distance relationship. The way he captivates the feeling of how we’re all fighting the clock to squeeze all we can out of every experience, but that there is always time for more if you really want it, pushing for overtime.
The raw production of ‘Overtime Again’ adds a charm you only get from such a personal account from an artist like this. I was not surprised to find out that Broodley self-produced the track using his experience, but being able to really drive home what he wanted to deliver. I always find that when an artist takes such an end-to-end role in the creative process, they always end up with something special, which is definitely the case here.
To quote his Spotify biography, “He came back to country music not chasing what he’d left behind but with a sharper perspective and something real to say.” Honestly, after listening to ‘Overtime Again’, it is clear for all to hear that this is the case, and I can’t wait to hear more from him!
