Nell Davies – Another Face (2022)

Nell Davies is telling a haunting, brooding and dark tale in her single ‘Another Face’. Swirling with atmospheric synths and post-punk guitars, the single looks at the real-life story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, aka the Silent Twins. Through the track, Davies weaves their experience of racist bullying, imaginary worlds, arson, sanctioning at Broadmoor and death.

As Davies’ third single, it showcases her storytelling ability and captivating musical prowess. The single has also seen her being featured on BBC Introducing in the South West. She only started making music in 2020 after she read Viv Albertine’s autobiography and was inspired to buy a guitar and start making music. Writing, recording and producing her music herself, she draws listeners into her world letting them escape reality for a little while.

The guitars draw you into ‘Another Face’ with a moody twang. There is a gentle feeling to the opening line that leads you into the post-punk beats. As your head starts to bop to the beats, the guitars pluck and tumble through you. It is a wonderfully textured melody that has you meandering through the story of the track with endless forward momentum. While the guitars fill your sense with sweeps of post-punk goodness, the synths fill the higher levels with an almost whimsical atmospheric vibe. There is a touch of escapism to the music that beckons you into another world far removed from the one we all live in.

As you wander down the melody, Davies’ vocals bring the haunting edge to the track. Her voice calls to you with an otherworldly power. There is a gentle touch to her performance that brings the emotions of the track to life. As you listen to the lyrics, you are filled with a bittersweet feeling as you feel the connection the twins had and the pain caused by the world. Her performance is emotive and powerful as she draws you into the story of the twins and what they were feeling as they moved through life. The chorus is poignant while making you want to sing along as it gets hopelessly stuck in your head.

Nell Davies fills you with bittersweet emotions as the brooding and otherworldly tones of ‘Another Face’ settle in your soul. The music has a touch of escapism woven into the atmospheric post-punk tones. Davies’ vocals seem to call to you from another plane of existence as they fill you with the emotions of the track.
