Noble Savage – Leap into Shade (2020)

The journey of life is full of pain and difficulties. Noble Savage has captured the journey from pain to light in their latest single ‘Leap into Shade’. The single looks at a character who is living on the periphery and feels a painful sense of inferiority. As they fall in love with someone the feeling of not belonging and rejection increases. As they fade into the shadows, they come to the realisation that they are powerful and to accept who they are.

This deep look into the totality of existence comes from a band that is a face without a face. The slippery character of Noble Savage brings the spirit of counterculture to life with a blast of post-punk and darkwave. Mixing this with some 80s electronic underground tones, he reflects on his own way of looking at others.

‘Leap into Shade’ opens with dark synth beats and ominous middle lines. There is an 80s vibe to the music, but the dark edge offers a gothic wash. Through the melody, you can feel the shadows closing in around you but, instead of feeling fearful, there is a sense of comfort in them. This enhances the story of the lyrics and the emotional journey they provide. As the single progresses, there are shooting lights of synths that warp past your head breaking the darkness and leading you to light.

Noble Savage’s vocals bring the shadows to life through his smooth baritone. His performance is clear as he lays out what it feels like to be on the outside looking in. The lyrics and his delivery hit all the right post-punk notes while being relatable and engaging. His falsetto is wonderful and enhances the emotional drive of the track.

The story of the single is brought to visual life by Hari Sama in the official music video. Shot in black and white, the cinematic video follows Vinny Balbo who feels out of place in the world. Through the imagery, you get a sense of him being apart from the rest of society. The discomfort he feels is palpable in the visuals but this changes as he starts to feel an energy surging through him. As he dances, you get a sense that this is a new experience that he is learning to become comfortable with. The emotional journey of the track is beautifully and artistically portrayed in the aesthetically pleasing video.

Noble Savage takes you on an emotive journey through pain and self-acceptance with the dark synths of ‘Leap into Shadows’. Using a combination of melody and lyrics that flow effortlessly together, he tells a story while leading you to accept who you are. This has been brought to visual life by Hari Sama in the artful official music video.
