Nourallah Brothers – We Listened To The Radio (2025)
While the Nourallah Brothers were originally discovered by Brian Sampson of Western Vinyl almost 30 years ago – in 1998, to be precise – the brothers haven’t had the fame or notoriety of Oasis or the Bee Gees. Tumultuous is the word; a tumultuous whirl of setbacks, challenges and estrangement marked the career of Faris and Salim Nourallah. With solo projects, continental distances, sets of agoraphobia, and a bunch of other stuff, the Nourallah brothers return following 25 years of not talking. The reunion is not one to pursue fantastical fame, it’s just a couple of brothers getting back together to make music.
Following the single ‘Nothing Ever Goes Right’, the self-produced ‘We Listened To The Radio’ embraces the intriguing sounds of Britpop and indie-rock. Breathing life into old-school Oasis and Dodgy, the new single is a burst of nostalgic toe-tapping sound. Soft, soothing, calm and smooth, each instrument weaves seamlessly into a harmonic melody. Dynamic drums pulsate in the background with soaring guitars and a shimmer of keyboard peeping from behind.
Charming, chilled and laidback, ‘We Listened To The Radio’ isn’t packed with dramatic swoops of noise; it’s just there – something nice, sweet, and easy on the ears. Simplistic and barebones, but with twinkling fairy lights shining in the soundscape, the track is… well, I said it before, it’s nice. A breath of refreshing air to light the way through murky, mundane waters.
While some might want a rollercoaster ride of a song with raging highs and desperate lows, ‘We Listened To The Radio’ proves the beauty of simplicity. Add the rhythmic vocals with “Faris hitting the high notes and Salim taking the lower register”, and you have a song brimming with comfort. In fact, the chilled-out vocals make it seem like you’re chatting with old friends instead of meeting strangers. As tumultuous or challenging as the 25-year estrangement may have been, ‘We Listened To The Radio’ is the warm hug between two brothers, capturing a feeling of love, hope, and joy.
