Olie Beckett – New Obsession (2026)

It all began when Olie Beckett first heard Marshmello, and a lifelong desire to be a DJ was born. While he might not find himself a DJ, the US-based singer-songwriter is turning heads and making his way in the music industry. Growing up with music, with his dad playing his office radio to his mum humming around the house, Beckett discovered a passion for singing and songwriting; now, the 15-year-old musician has earned critical acclaim from notable publications such as Galore and Earmilk, has stunned audiences with confident performances, and continues to grow his following across the globe. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘New Obsession’.

His first release in 2026, ‘New Obsession’, retains Beckett’s distinctive 90s pop meets R&B sound but shows us another side to his musicality.  Not as smooth as ‘Hotels’, nor as feisty as ‘Hawkeye’, ‘New Obsession’ is polished, sophisticated, and teeters along the line between soulful R&B and “twirling about without any care” pop music. The shift may be subtle, but this greater maturity and finesse harken to a more settled Olie Beckett.

I wave the comparison to the likes of Harry Styles and Kelly Rowland, yet the inspiration flutters across ‘New Obsession’. Bold beats pulsate in the melody, while a sweep of synths inserts an underlying wistfulness. Yet, as much as the song prompts the feeling of complete innocence and carefree sensations, Beckett’s vocals ground you – an anchor in the wind, leading you with joyful pop sentiments.

Melodically, ‘New Obsession’ is both nonchalant and sombre as the arrangement lifts you from tranquil, chilled-out tones to vulnerable seriousness. It’s the perfect veiled duality to capture the theme, lyrics executed in rich, warm, but also fragile vocals. The place where “infatuation hits so hard it blurs the line between a crush and a full-blown fixation… portraying love as both exhilarating and slightly unhinged… the thrill of falling fast…”

So, my thoughts on Olie Beckett and ‘New Obsession’?`It might not be an obsession, but I’m definitely going to keep my eye on more from this rising talent. I suggest you do as well.
