Oreaganomics – Work Not Heart (2025)
Remaining in the shadows for over two decades, Oreaganomics is a band that lurks in the background but makes a massive impression – proof that you don’t need to be a bombastic showcase to win hearts. Allowing their music to do the talking, the US-based group aren’t telling us all about themselves, instead we’re being led through their enigmatic musical maze to find ourselves in their moving tunes. Opening the new year with the 13-track album, Locked out on Valentine’s Day, Oreaganomics present a plethora of sound from jazzy ‘Tame’ to funk meets punk ‘I Hate Me Too’ and the experimental ‘Was Great Now Good’; but we’re taking a look at ‘Work Not Heart’.
The second track off Locked out on Valentine’s Day, ‘Work Not Heart’ leans strongly toward the vintage funk tones of the 60s and 70s. A reminder of Earth, Wind & Fire peeps from ‘Work Not Heart’ with its steady flood of percussion, drums, guitar and keyboards. Each element weaves harmonically in a shiny, kaleidoscopic tapestry, and you can hear the camaraderie of the musicians riding that melodic groove.
Produced by Michael Hendrickson, ‘Work Not Heart’ is a sophisticated piece oozing warmth and comfort; however, just as there is elegance and poise in the melody, it also vibrates with raw human emotion, making it polished but personal. As I mentioned, Oreaganomics breathes life into the 70s funk scene, with a strong nostalgic breath of Earth, Wind & Fire. For me, this is evident in the charming vocals – a wink away from Phil Bailey’s iconic falsetto.
So, what is my overall opinion of Oreaganomics and ‘Work Not Heart’? As a band, Oreaganomics pours intimacy and familiarity into their music. When it comes to ‘Work Not Heart’, the group brings a retro sound to modern audiences with head-spinning oomph.
In addition to the single, Oreaganomics released a music video for ‘Work Not Heart’. You can view the video below and/or on their YouTube channel.
